If you’re looking to start a career operating plant machinery, you may be wondering whether you need previous experience before applying for an NPORS card.
The good news is that you can get an NPORS card without any prior experience. NPORS offers training routes specifically designed for beginners, allowing new operators to gain the skills, knowledge and qualifications needed to work safely and competently within the construction, plant and machinery industries.
In this guide, we’ll explain how the process works, which card you’ll receive as a beginner, and what steps you’ll need to take to progress your career.
If you’re completely new to plant machinery, Evolve Plant Training offers beginner-friendly NPORS courses designed to help you gain the skills and confidence needed to start your career safely.

What Is an NPORS Card?
The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) is one of the UK’s leading accreditation and registration bodies for plant machinery operators. NPORS qualifications are recognised across a wide range of industries, including construction, utilities, logistics, agriculture, quarrying and renewables.

An NPORS card demonstrates that an operator has successfully completed the relevant training and assessment for a specific category of plant or machinery.
Common NPORS training categories include:
- Excavators
- Dumpers
- Telehandlers
- Forward tipping dumpers
- Roller operators
- Loading shovels
- Forklift trucks
- Crane and lifting operations
Can Beginners Get an NPORS Card?
Yes.
You do not need previous experience to begin NPORS training. In fact, many people start with no plant operating experience whatsoever.
New entrants typically complete a novice training course, where they learn:
- Health and safety requirements
- Daily machine inspections
- Safe operating procedures
- Practical machine operation
- Site hazards and risk management
- Industry best practices
Upon successfully completing the course and assessment, operators can obtain the relevant NPORS certification and card.

What Card Do You Receive If You Have No Experience?
The card you receive depends on the sector you work in and whether you hold the relevant NVQ qualification.
For construction-related roles, new operators who do not yet hold the required NVQ are typically issued with an NPORS Trained Operator Card. This card is valid for two years and gives operators time to gain workplace experience and complete the relevant NVQ qualification needed to progress to a Competent Operator Card.
If you’re working outside of construction, you may instead obtain a Traditional NPORS Operator Card following successful training and assessment.

NPORS vs CPCS: Which Plant Operator Card Is Best in 2026? (UK Guide)
The Typical Beginner Route to an NPORS Card
For someone with no experience, the process is usually straightforward:
Step 1: Attend a Novice NPORS Training Course
Your instructor will teach you how to safely operate the machinery and prepare you for the practical and theory assessments.
Step 2: Complete the Assessment
You’ll be assessed on both your knowledge and practical operating ability.
Step 3: Obtain Your NPORS Card
Following successful completion, you’ll receive the appropriate NPORS card for your chosen category.
Step 4: Gain Workplace Experience
As you begin working with the machinery, you’ll develop real-world experience under normal site conditions.
Step 5: Progress to a Competent Operator Card
Operators working towards the construction route can complete the relevant NVQ and progress to an NPORS Competent Operator Card, which is valid for five years.
Do You Need an NVQ Before Starting?
No.
A common misconception is that you need an NVQ before you can start NPORS training. In reality, many new operators begin with training and assessment first.
The NVQ becomes important later if you wish to progress from a Trained Operator Card to a Competent Operator Card.
Which NPORS Courses Are Best for Beginners?
Several plant categories are popular entry points for new operators, including:
NPORS Excavator Training
Excavators are among the most commonly used machines across construction and groundworks projects.
NPORS Forward Tipping Dumper Training
A popular starting point for operators entering the construction industry.
NPORS Telehandler Training
Telehandlers are widely used on construction sites and in agricultural settings.
NPORS Roller Training
Roller operators are in demand across road construction and civil engineering projects.
What Are Employers Looking For?
Many employers value recognised qualifications and safe working practices over previous experience alone.
Holding an NPORS card demonstrates that you have:
- Completed accredited training
- Passed practical and theory assessments
- Received instruction from qualified trainers
- Demonstrated safe operating practices
For many entry-level roles, this can be enough to help secure your first opportunity within the industry.
